THE ART OF DINING
The Well-Laid Table

The cutlery is laid starting from the outside and working in. The knife is on the right with the cutting edge facing towards the plate, the fork is on the left the spoon is placed on the outside right, or above the plate. The bowl of the spoon and the prongs of the fork face upwards. In aristocratic circles it is usual for fork and spoon to face downwards (à la Russe) so that the coat-of-arms on the back is visible.
