2nd half of the 1950s
The advent of espresso in the 1950s instilled a new vitality into the Viennese coffeehouse scene. Inspired by the light-heartedness of the Italian way of life, Oswald Haerdtl designed the interiors of numerous cafés in the style of the time, including the famous Arabia Espresso on Kohlmarkt in Vienna. His cutlery shows something of the positive buoyant feeling of this epoch. The fine, deeply engraved fluting quotes from classical forms of decoration, enriched by contemporary Italian influences.
